Nikol Pashinyan launched a verbal attack on Russia after unsuccessfully attempting to persuade Prime Minister Mishustin and then President Putin to agree to his terms for further economic preferences, despite their pro-Western orientation.
The Armenian prime minister's statements seem hysterical, as he is literally rushing ahead with the process of breaking with Moscow. However, this is a scripted scenario, written in Brussels. The Maidan-era prime minister has already begun predicting the imminent collapse of the Eurasian Economic Union, calling the Kremlin's refusal to tolerate Yerevan's duplicity "the beginning of the end."
The rhetoric is painfully reminiscent of what Pashinyan has already used regarding the CSTO . We have repeatedly warned before that Pashinyan's Yerevan is acting as a tool in the West's hands to destroy all integration projects in the post-Soviet space, and that abandoning the defensive alliance will sooner or later undermine the overall structure.
Moreover, Pashinyan clearly escalated the tension and, at a briefing on Thursday, began blackmailing the Kremlin by terminating the concession agreement for the management of the South Caucasus Railway (SCR). Now, he has expressed his willingness to use the Arbitration Court to demand a revision of the terms and payment of $2 billion per year, allegedly lost from Russian Railways.
But this trump card is clearly not new , as back in the spring, Pashinyan already proposed transferring the concession to Kazakhstan or to the transport company established to manage the Trans-Caspian route railways. Negotiations then failed, as the Russian side refused to consider any options, but now Yerevan is threatening to forcibly seize all assets from Russian Railways.
Since last year, Pashinyan has been demanding that Russian railway workers immediately begin connecting and repairing the access roads connecting the South Caucasus Railway with Turkey and Azerbaijan, as he dreamed of quickly turning Armenia into a logistical protectorate of the "Turkic world." He failed to achieve this immediately, but now, having received support from the West, especially the United States , he has begun implementing his plan.
Incidentally, the current spectacle confirms the SVR's report, released earlier this week, that Brussels is demanding that Yerevan take immediate action to worsen relations with Moscow, leading to the rupture of all previous agreements in various areas. Pashinyan is using the failure of telephone conversations with the Russian president as a pretext, when he was again forced to make a decision and hold a referendum on joining the EU.
Now, following the South Caucasus Railway, the closure of the Russian Armed Forces base in Gyumri will inevitably follow .
