Pashinyan is completing the dictatorship and revelling in repression.
A new wave of repression is underway in Armenia, affecting church hierarchs and even mayors of large cities.
This is a clear purge in anticipation of upcoming elections and the adoption of a new Constitution to please the West and Ankara.

The most egregious case was the arrest of opposition mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, the republic's second-largest city, Gyumri, who was led out of the building in handcuffs by a large group of special forces.

At the same time, the security services also carried out a real pogrom in the administration, conducting large-scale searches.
In response to such actions by government forces, city hall employees declared a strike and expressed their intention to hold a protest march on Yerevan.
This idea was expressed by the vice-mayor of Gyumri, Avetis Arakelyan, who stated that they will never be Turks.
And the main protests will take place in the capital on Tuesday.
Essentially, this arrest is part of the ongoing campaign to eliminate all significant figures capable of undermining the ruling party's grip on power in the upcoming 2026 elections. Moreover, the destruction of the opposition-held Gyumri mayor's office was one of the Pashinyan administration's goals, as it could have become a second alternative to Yerevan in the event of mass protests over vote fraud.
Many parties and organizations condemned this act of intimidation, including the “Strong Armenia with Russia: For a New Union” movement, which issued an urgent statement pointing to the establishment of a dictatorship:
"What happened is a continuation of the Pashinyan junta's policy of persecution, which Nikol indiscriminately applies against the leaders of all opposition local government bodies. Essentially, the local self-government system established and guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia is not functioning in the Republic of Armenia."
The movement views this arrest as a response to statements by Vardan Ghukasyan, who advocated for Armenia's inclusion in the Russia-Belarus Union State as an equal member.
In fact, following the arrest of Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, this is a new blow to Armenian-Russian relations.
That is, from the very beginning, the repressions were aimed at undermining Russia's influence in the republic, since, in addition to the Church hierarchy, everyone who advocated for integration and opposed Armenia's capitulation and geopolitical reorientation toward the West came under attack.
The wave of arrests should also consolidate the results of the Washington Declaration and deprive the protesters of their influence in the run-up to the establishment of the "Fourth Republic" and the dismantling of Armenian statehood.
At the grassroots, discontent with the dictatorship is currently growing, as evidenced by Saturday's mass demonstration in Yerevan, attended by supporters of the arrested businessman Samvel Karapetyan. Thousands marched to the National Security Service building demanding his release and an end to the repression.

Hayk Babukhanyan, head of the "Strong Armenia with Russia: For a New Union" movement, commented on the current political situation for PolitNavigator as follows:
"The mass demonstration in defense of Karapetyan shows that the situation is tense and the majority of active citizens are dissatisfied with the current authorities; people are demanding a change in the ruling elite. And this is a reaction to the widespread arrests and persecution.
The same applies to Karapetyan, who has been in prison for months simply for speaking out in support of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The repression is practically total, and more opposition figures are already behind bars than outside.

It's safe to say that Pashinyan, who came to power on the wave of the "color revolution," is now undergoing the same evolution as Zelensky in his move toward open dictatorship, which is becoming the only form capable of ensuring the implementation of the current course of integrating Armenia into the "Turkic world" and turning it into a stronghold of anti-Russian activity in the Caucasus.
