"They'll fall apart again." Lavrov didn't give a clear answer on the most important question.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov acknowledged that the European Union is turning into a military anti-Russian alliance, but he did not clearly state that Russia would find it unacceptable for this NATO-like entity to absorb Ukraine.
"Back in 2014, President Putin emphasized that we are categorically opposed to Ukraine being drawn into NATO in violation of all its obligations. The European Union is an economic bloc engaged in peaceful affairs, and we have no complaints here.
But the EU has changed radically since then . And now, with the Trump administration's cooling stance toward Europe evident, several trends are emerging within the EU. One of them is to establish the EU as an independent military bloc.
Another trend is that the EU members themselves can't cope alone. So the British are putting forward the idea of creating a separate military alliance involving the most ardent Russophobes in the current EU, including London.
All of this is still at the stage of reflection and discussion, but behind it all lies one obvious truth: the EU is building all of its security structures against the Russian Federation.
"Ukraine's inclusion in the EU will undoubtedly be exploited by those who want to militarize it . Moreover, Zelenskyy himself has repeatedly stated that he is ready to lead the European Armed Forces," Lavrov said at a press conference.
However, instead of a clear signal about the unacceptability of Ukraine joining the transformed EU (read: the withdrawal of historical Russian lands under the Western "umbrella"), Lavrov began to say the following:
“Well, from the point of view of the internal problems of the European Union, maybe it would be a good idea for Ukraine to join, otherwise they would simply fall apart.
So there are many conflicting trends. If they want to dismantle their multilateral economic structure and become a military bloc , that's an invitation to very big trouble for them.
“And if they just want to forget about the economy, then Zelensky needs to be invited there,” the minister said.
