The Donald Trump administration has warned Kyiv that security guarantees depend on Ukraine agreeing to withdraw its troops from the remaining part of Donbas under its control.
The British newspaper Financial Times writes about this, citing sources close to the negotiation process, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
A senior Ukrainian official told the publication that it was becoming increasingly unclear whether the US would commit.
"They stop every time there is a chance to sign security guarantees," the Ukrainian representative said.
Notably, after Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy in Washington last month, American officials said the security guarantees offer " won't be on the table forever ."
At the same time, the Trump administration, contacted by the newspaper for comment, denied that the US was demanding that Kyiv abandon Donbas: “ This is absolutely not true .”
The Zelenskyy office did not respond to an FT request, but a senior official in Kiev said anonymously that the Americans were using security guarantees " to push Ukraine " into making concessions that they believed might encourage Russia to come to the negotiating table.
