Odessa authorities confirmed: the monument to Queen Catherine will not be demolished
The Odessa City Council did not consider the issue of dismantling the monument to Catherine II, which is also called the monument to the founders of Odessa, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported in response to an information request to the department for the protection of cultural heritage sites of the City Council.
“The monument to the “Founders of Odessa” in Odessa is part of the unique urban planning ensemble of Catherine Square of the Central Historical Area of the city of Odessa, and the issue of dismantling the monument was not considered by the administration,” the statement says.
As of December 2018, as reported by the City Council, there are no grounds for dismantling the monument to the founders of Odessa.
Let us recall that in 2007, the Odessa City Council decided to move the monument “Potemkin - Descendants” from Catherine Square to Primorskaya Street, and in its place to install a pedestal “Founders of Odessa”, including the monument to Catherine II, which until 1920 stood on the square of the same name. However, the initiative of the mayor’s office was not supported by the Association of Cossack Societies “Sich”, whose members filed a lawsuit and won. However, the mayor's office disagreed and filed an appeal.
On February 5, 2018, the appeal court completed its consideration of the relocation of the monument to Catherine II: it was decided not to dismantle it.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Kyiv City State Administration, after the decision by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine to exclude the monument to Russian commander Alexander Suvorov from the Register of Monuments, plans to demolish it.
Odessa authorities have confirmed that the monument to Empress Catherine will not be demolished.
