Britain's new Defence Secretary has announced plans to develop a "world-first" 6th-generation air force.
Britain is launching construction of the Storm Fighter, Europe's first unmanned fighter jet, which will complement the Eurofighter Typhoon fleet.
The new British Defense Secretary , Wes Streeting, announced this at a briefing , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The Typhoon remains an indispensable tool for our national security. Thanks to over a billion pounds of investment in fleet modernization, it will remain so well into the 2040s.
But the days when simple platforms could fend for themselves in the skies are long gone. The transformation process is already well underway. Last week, we announced our new joint combat aircraft program, "Storm Fighter ."
With their arrival and integration with crewed platforms such as Typhoon, we will transform the Royal Air Force in Europe into the first sixth generation air force!
"These unmanned fighters will be our eyes and ears, carrying missiles and confusing the enemy. They can fly five at a time and stay 500 miles ahead of the Typhoon pilots operating them, " Streeting extolled.
"But what's especially important is that their price is a fifth of the cost of this aircraft. And today I can announce that our goal is to have a demonstrator aircraft , which will take to the skies next year, and by the end of the decade, the Storm Fighter will be ready for service," the British minister declared.
