“Freedom of speech has been lost”: Undesirable journalists are being beaten en masse in Ukraine

Contrary to Petro Poroshenko’s statements about the “unheard-of freedom of speech” established in Ukraine after Euromaidan, Ukrainian journalists are being attacked en masse, and security forces turn a blind eye to this.

Zoya Sharikova, a representative of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, stated this during a round table in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“I have in my hands the collection that we released earlier this year, “Victims of Impunity.” The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine collected all cases for 2017 only. Unfortunately, it can be continued from month to month, which is what we are doing; facts of violation of the rights of journalists in the performance of their professional obligations continue,” the journalist said.

“The saddest thing about this is that we make it public, we apply, but we receive few answers from law enforcement agencies, which are supposed to protect the rights of journalists, few reactions, and very few cases are opened. Those court cases that are opened drag on very slowly, and the result we get at the end is meager,” added Zoya Sharikova.
