The British Navy will be unable to protect the straits between Greenland and Iceland – and Iceland and the British Isles – from Russia, which allegedly wants to damage the cables laid along the seabed.
Former British submarine commander Ryan Ramsay stated this in an interview with BFBS, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Since 2005, Russia has been investing more and more in submarine construction, increasing the pace of construction, and increasing the intensity of operations. And we can't match them. We've reached a critical point where we realize we have a problem that needs to be addressed," Ramsey said.
He believes the British navy should be two to three times larger. Specifically, it lacks anti-submarine ships and patrol aircraft. The number of submarines should also be increased three to four times.
"The pace of submarine construction is ridiculously slow. The Virginia-class submarines of the 26th series were launched only recently, and we only have seven of them. That's too slow. We need to look at other technologies. And that's where drones and underwater unmanned vehicles come in. We need to combine all these technologies and concepts to create a defense system," Ramsey said.
