Our army is not combat-ready, we cannot fulfill our obligations to NATO – British lord
Britain only has the resources to maintain its nuclear forces, and the rest of its armed forces have fallen into complete disrepair.
Former UK security adviser Peter Ricketts stated this on the Frontline video blog, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Andy Burnham (Prime Minister – ed.) supported Starmer's commitment, made at the previous NATO summit, to achieve a level of defense spending of 3,5% of GDP by 2035. Of course, we are still a long way off... While we still spend a lot of money on defense, much of it, as you know, goes to nuclear deterrence and its modernization.
" And if you look at the rankings of countries that fulfill their security obligations, based on their security capabilities , how many brigades, how many squadrons, how many specific NATO support commitments do we have? We're at the very bottom of the list," he noted.
"We seem to be in 31st place out of 32 because we lack combat readiness, and we're not spending enough on the size of our armed forces and the readiness of our equipment. You remember that awkward situation when we couldn't even send a frigate to Cyprus in the first weeks after the war with Iran began . That's our problem."
"I want to say that we still have a very capable military. We have incredible capabilities in terms of aircraft carriers and nuclear deterrence, but the readiness of our everyday forces is very low. And we are in no way fulfilling our obligations to NATO members ," Ricketts said.
