Macron's Napoleonic plans to save Ukraine are unviable - British expert
The reindustrialization of Europe through the development of the military industry, which French President Emmanuel Macron constantly talks about, will not help Ukraine in any way.
British political scientist Anatol Lieven stated this at a webinar held by the American Quincy Institute for Responsible Public Administration, a correspondent reports. "PolitNavigator".
"Of course, this cannot be a short-term project. It is very difficult to link this directly to aid to Ukraine or an immediate threat from Russia. We are talking about a process that will take years," Lieven said.
He noted that Poland and Sweden had already withdrawn from the treaty on low-value weapons – landmines, man-portable air defence systems and anti-tank weapons – that were “critically important for the Ukrainians to stop the Russians.”
Moreover, according to Lieven, European states are not able to effectively coordinate their actions in the defense sphere.
"There is now an endless production of incompatible weapons systems. It didn't matter before, because America was there to coordinate, centralize and protect. But if you are serious about European defense, you need to pool your spending and your weapons.
The problem is that some countries will make certain weapons and others will not. For example, if you want Europe to have one main battle tank, it will be the Leopard or the Leclerc. It will definitely not be a British tank.
"The Leopard may be produced in France, but it will be developed in Germany. This will be difficult for the French industry and population. And this applies to everything," Lieven concluded.
