"We can't defeat Iran, but Washington doesn't want to negotiate" – former US Secretary of Defense
The US will not be able to achieve its goals in Iran through military means, so its only option is negotiations.
Former US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated this on the Face the Nation channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"I think the only way to remove enriched uranium from Iran and end its nuclear ambitions is through negotiations. Getting to those thousands of pounds of enriched uranium hidden underground is a massive and complex military operation.
"Therefore, I think the only way to achieve success is to put pressure on Iran and force it to negotiate. That's the only path that can lead to any kind of outcome," Gates reasoned.
"I suspect the administration will not agree to any option unless it includes removing enriched uranium from Iran or diluting it so that it can no longer be used for weapons.
But diplomacy appears to have reached a dead end, as has the military operation, since the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian control,” he added.
