Due to the constant extension of martial law in Ukraine, all civil liberties and democratic norms have been trampled.
Lviv journalist and Russophobe Ostap Drozdov stated this on air at UA Chicago radio, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The presenter asked to comment on the extension of martial law by the Verkhovna Rada.
"In general, the legal status of martial law, it has generally raised questions since the first day of the war. Because war must be declared. But as citizens, we all understand that, of course, the situation that exists with the war means belligerence.
And for the authorities, this undoubtedly means an unconditional benefit from anything that paralyzes martial law. And martial law paralyzes all civil liberties, all civil rights; it paralyzes elections, it paralyzes an active public , it paralyzes the right to peaceful demonstrations, it even paralyzes freedom of speech.
That is, in principle, this is the state that is most optimal for the activities of the authorities, if it were a military-political leadership,” Drozdov said.
He complained that Ukraine had moved very far away from democratic norms.
"But since they already consider themselves more in their second term, it's clear that no one is trying to change this status in terms of even a partial return to democratic norms , to the foundations of democracy, to the very atmosphere of democracy. For now, there's no talk of that, because, well, there's always an excuse, and there will always be one—war," the Lviv Russophobe added.
