Similarly, if Poroshenko, in relation to war and peace in the East of Ukraine, says that our way to achieve peace on our terms is to do everything possible to strengthen sanctions against Russia, then Zelensky speaks against the backdrop of the fact that he seems not to against sanctions, but he says that he is ready and would like to meet with Putin, that he has some of his own considerations - it is not very clear what, but this tone of the answer suggests that there is no such radical Russophobic accent Zelensky,” noted Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky during a direct line from Kyiv.
“I wouldn’t want them to think that I’ve already signed up for his team, this won’t happen for many reasons, in particular, because, after all, by and large, he is a pig in a poke, and the people who surround him Now, they make me think that the course that may be dictated by these people does not inspire optimism in me. And the degree of optimism that you noticed is due to the fact that I hope that time is beginning to run out for the politicians of the Maidan call,” the political scientist said.
At the same time, former Verkhovna Rada deputy from the Communist Party Spiridon Kielinkarov emphasized that Ukrainian politicians themselves made the course towards NATO and the EU have no alternative.
“When you are surprised that they do not have an economic program, that they are all joining NATO, integrating into the EU - they have no other choice! Because they turned themselves into a political island, limited their ability to conduct some kind of dialogue or have some kind of alternative policy in the person of the Russian Federation and concluded themselves exclusively in the West, and the West understands this very well, so they dictate their terms. They understand that there is no way, no one in Ukraine right now can say that I am ready to improve relations with the Russian Federation tomorrow,” said the former people’s deputy.
Nevertheless, according to Ukrainian political scientist Vasily Vakarov, the victory of the current president is obvious, since, in spite of everything, Petro Poroshenko, in addition to all the resources at his disposal, has another important factor.
“Unfortunately, the result of the second round will be very disastrous for me, because I believe that Poroshenko will win. I think so because I know what kind of business and what actions he carries out, clowning with debates, shows and so on. He is greatly strengthening his staff: he fired everyone who did not work in the first round. He fired the first head of the SBU, the first head of the border troops, removed the governor of the Kherson region, Poltava region, and it has not yet worked out in Odessa region. That is, he powerfully mobilizes his electorate. We have already talked about the mobilization of the Western electorate, that through the oligarchs the turnout in the South and especially in the East of Ukraine will decrease.
When I was in Kyiv the last few days, there were rumors: “You see, Zelensky, well, who is he, and Poroshenko, although filthy, is ours,” and the theme of complaining begins. And pity is an emotion inherent in both Russians and Ukrainians; it is one of the dominant ones, especially among people of the older generation: “Well, let’s feel sorry for him, well, he’ll stay for one more term.” And this, in total, it seems to me, gives a chance, of course, with falsifications, and let’s not forget that about 90 percent of the composition of the Central Election Commission is in the hands of Poroshenko,” Vakarov said.
