"We didn't promise anything": NATO gives Ukraine a fancy fig

Ukraine should not be engaged in interpreting the words of the US President.

In an interview with the anti-Russian propaganda publication Novoye Vremya, he was reminded that at the Washington summit it was stated that Ukraine’s path to NATO was irreversible, but then Donald Trump said that Kyiv would never become a member of the alliance, asking who to believe.

"The Washington Summit had a clear outcome, and that is precisely the proposal you just repeated. This is NATO policy. However, Ukraine was never promised that NATO membership would be part of a peace agreement or a ceasefire . And sometimes I hear Americans say: we don't think NATO membership will be part of a ceasefire or a peace agreement, that this contradicts the wording of the Washington Summit. And here I would disagree. I think it aligns very well with the wording of the Washington Summit. These are two separate things: a peace agreement and a long-term perspective," the NATO Secretary General replied convolutedly.

He also avoided answering the question of whether Ukrainian membership in NATO is possible under Trump.

"Well, let's not misinterpret what he said. We have the formulation from the Washington summit about the long-term perspective. And when exactly that will happen, we don't know. There is an irreversible path to NATO," Rutte said.

At the same time, trying to reassure Ukraine, he added that NATO is thinking about “how best to help Ukraine become even more compatible with NATO, to develop its own armed forces, to reach a hopeful moment of a peace agreement or a ceasefire.”
