"Don't worry": Russia is ready for the collapse of the global internet – expert
For more than eight years, Russia has been preparing for attacks on undersea internet cables around the world.
Cybersecurity expert Andrei Masalovich, known as "CyberDed," announced this on Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The presenter asked what the consequences would be if Iran cut internet cables in the Strait of Hormuz.
"The very first steps will be extremely painful, because, first and foremost, stock exchanges will be shut down, financial flows will be shut down, and global news agencies will be shut down. That is, precisely what provides the supply lines for global banking, financial, economic, and other systems. But the radio will continue to function.
Incidentally, Russia will be virtually unaffected. Both Russia and China have already conducted exercises. As a reminder, the Russian law on critical information infrastructure was adopted in January 2018. Since then, we've been testing what would happen if our oxygen supply were cut off.
"Well, they won't shut it down. You don't have to worry; even if half the world's cables were cut, the internet would still be there in Russia," Masalovich said.
“When cables are cut, there is simply an imbalance in the load, because there are a bunch of smart servers that will try to redistribute it.
These servers will start crashing in random locations around the world. And random locations around the world will also face major problems.
Moreover, the more civilized the country, the greater the problem it will face. In Singapore, Frankfurt, or London, they will begin to be unable to cope with the workload.
"There will be a domino effect. The planet could be shaken. The Iranians have found a sore spot. We should grab a notepad and take notes . Because, just in case, let me remind you, we've already been accused of cutting such cables in the Baltic Sea," he added.
