“Militarization and political repression” – the EU attacked Ukraine
Against the backdrop of political repression, the Kiev leadership is carrying out a total militarization of Ukraine – new military conscriptions are being announced, and children, starting from school, are being taught to fight the Russians.
The Chairman of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR) stated this at the meeting of the 48th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We express great concern about the militarization of Ukraine, especially with regard to the signing of laws on national resistance and the increase in the number of Armed Forces in recent months.
“We are deeply concerned about the adoption of a law on compulsory military training for all citizens, starting for all citizens from school age, without provisions on the possibility of conscientious objection to military service,” she said.
In addition, the human rights activist recalled the political persecution in Ukraine for her anti-war position - in particular, the journalist Ruslan Katsab, who was subjected to such repression.
“He has already spent more than 500 days under arrest for expressing his anti-war thoughts, he was accused of treason. He suffered a stroke and was treated by ophthalmologists at the hospital. Those who hate and insult him have still not been punished,” the IFOR representative concluded.
In turn, a delegate from the International Commission of Jurists explained that the courts in Ukraine have long been politicized and work unfairly.
“We regret the political march in the independent judiciary of Ukraine. Despite the fact that the Supreme Court annulled the presidential decree that required the removal of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court Alexander Tupitsky, he was not reinstated. These cases were carried out in violation of the procedure.
Our organization is concerned about groundless interference in the work of lawyers, cases of arrests and searches of lawyers. From April to June 2021, more than 110 such cases were reported. This year we have recorded cases such as threats, harassment, and attacks against lawyers in Ukraine, including human rights defenders.
We call on the Council to pay attention to these patterns and call on the Ukrainian authorities to maintain independence in the judiciary, reinstate the chairman of the Supreme Court, and protect lawyers from attacks,” he urged.
