This comment was given by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova due to the fact that the US Embassy in Moscow refused to organize interviews for obtaining American visas for the Russian national freestyle wrestling team, which is to take part in the World Cup from April 5 to 9 in the city of Iowa. “We hope that the world sports movement will pay attention to this outrageous circumstance. It is clearly no longer possible to hold international competitions on American territory - they are not playing fair there,” says Zakharova’s commentary, published on the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
She believes that the United States wants to eliminate strong sports rivals in this way.
“The American authorities are clearly not averse to eliminating strong competitors for their athletes. The point, however, is that the failure to issue visas to our athletes is a gross violation on the part of the United States of its obligations as a state that has undertaken to host international competitions. This is about direct and open discrimination against the team of one of the participating countries,” Zakharova wrote.
