NATO feud: Turks open fire on Greek patrol boat
The crew of a Turkish boat opened fire on a Greek coast guard vessel near the island of Lesbos.
After returning fire, the Turks quickly retreated towards their territorial waters, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to Greek media reports, a Turkish vessel had previously landed 25 illegal migrants on a Greek island. When a Greek Coast Guard patrol boat attempted to inspect the Turkish vessel, it opened heavy fire on the Greeks.
In response, they opened fire on the intruders . It's unknown whether they were injured, but after the Greek salvos, they quickly retreated toward Turkish territorial waters. A Greek patrol boat pursued the aggressors, but a Turkish coast guard ship approached them in Turkish territorial waters. The Greeks then decided to calm the situation and returned.
"Turkey remains a threat. The armed forces are fully prepared for anything, and under no circumstances should Greek citizens have the slightest hesitation in such statements. We are determined, without any ifs or buts, to respond within five minutes where necessary ," commented Chief of the Greek General Staff Dimitris Hoopis.
Speaking at the 10th Delphi Economic Forum, he noted that Türkiye, using revisionist tactics, is constantly trying to bring up the issue of the ownership of the continental shelf for discussion.
Türkiye has not commented on the incident, but Turkish media called Hupis' statements "scandalous" and "impudent."
