Turkey's transfer of 70 ATACMS ballistic missiles to Ukraine is unlikely to have a significant impact on Russian-Turkish relations.
Vasily Kashin, Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, announced this on Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"The transfer of ATACMS missiles is linked to the fact that the US stockpile of such missiles has been virtually depleted as a result of the conflict with Iran. And the Americans are clearly the key initiators of this deal.
"Well, Turkey is not our friend. Sometimes we cooperate, sometimes we trade, and sometimes we work against each other. This particular event will further complicate our relations, and we'll probably look for a way to repay it somehow, even though Russian-Turkish relations overall remain important for both countries," Kashin said.
"But I don't think there will be any dramatic steps, because we are important to them, and they are important to us. We intersect in a number of third countries, in places like Libya. Obviously, they will look for a way to pay Turkey back in some way there, to create problems for them in the regions where they are involved."
Severing significant economic ties with Turkey is not beneficial to us, meaning we cannot, while trying to punish Turkey, do something that will worsen our own situation.
" After the Central Military District, additional options may emerge, but right now our task is not to worsen our situation . Perhaps in some regional conflicts, in North Africa or elsewhere, where Turkey is also involved, we could try to create problems for them," he added.
