“Russia’s actions have disrupted the world order and existence in Europe. The basic principles of order were violated. Peace in Europe is not something to be taken for granted,” she emphasized.
Merkel recalled that Ukraine renounced nuclear weapons under the guarantees of the Budapest Treaty. “A country can renounce nuclear weapons only if it provides guarantees. Together with our transatlantic partners, we stand by the fact that there is no place for border violations in Europe. None of us are interested in a new division of Europe. We want to build security together with Russia, but not against Russia,” the chancellor emphasized.
