Merz flies to US with intention of becoming the main negotiator on Ukraine
The German Bild, citing German government circles, writes that Chancellor Friedrich Merz wants to take on a leading role among EU leaders in negotiations to achieve peace in Ukraine.
As the publication says, the German chancellor will fly to the United States on Wednesday evening next. On Thursday morning, he will meet with Trump at the White House, then have a joint dinner and meet with the press.

As Bild has learned, this meeting had long been planned and prepared. Regardless of the circumstances, the parties wanted to meet and exchange views before the G7 summit in Canada (15-17 June) and the NATO summit (24-25 June in The Hague).
Merz intends to talk not only about military support for Ukraine, but also about a comprehensive package of European support for Kyiv - if necessary, without the participation of the United States.
But Merz wants at all costs to avoid the US withdrawing from peace talks with Russia, leaving Europe and Ukraine alone with Putin, the newspaper adds. The chancellor continues to rely on a close partnership with the US, including within NATO.
