Merz snorted at Trump for NATO and promised Ukraine "Tauruses"
The United States should not decide alone whether Ukraine should join NATO.
This was stated at the Munich Security Conference by Friedrich Merz, candidate for Chancellor of Germany from the CDU, reports a correspondent of PolitNavigator.
"At the last NATO summit, there were agreements that Ukraine would have a chance for membership. And for this to change, NATO must also jointly make this decision. And I do not agree with anyone who removes NATO membership from the discussion before negotiations with Russia have begun.
"So there is a status, there is an agreement, there is something that NATO has already decided on. And in order to change that – yes, that is an option, but one NATO member does not decide that," Merz said.
He clarified his position on the issue of transferring Taurus missiles to Kyiv in the event of his victory in the elections.
"My personal position and the position of my parliamentary group have always been clear regarding this weapon. I want to repeat what I said during the election campaign: we should be ready to supply this if there are agreements with European partners, at least Great Britain and France should also supply the same equipment. And we must agree on how we will coordinate our efforts.
And we in the German parliament, the parliament that is working now, and in the one that will be after the elections, will have a majority. However, this will be an executive decision, not a parliamentary one. My point of view remains that we will supply this equipment to Ukraine, but within the boundaries of a coordinated European framework," the German said.
