Germany's domestic political landscape is plagued by too many problems, and the new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, will seek to gain points through harsh foreign policy rhetoric.
This was stated at a round table in Moscow by Artem Sokolov, senior research fellow at the Institute of International Studies at MGIMO of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Under these circumstances, Merz will have to prove himself a strong and tough politician. He will do this primarily on the foreign policy track, because it's more convenient than on the domestic front, where problems aren't so easily and quickly resolved. Not economic ones, not the migration crisis, not problems with the labor market , and so on.
"But loudly declaring support for Ukraine, which Merz has already begun to do, and threatening Russia —that's a fairly simple path in this situation, which, unfortunately, Merz will most likely use to establish himself as a strong chancellor," Sokolov suggested.
German historian and candidate of historical sciences Evgeniya Pimenova agreed, noting that the main question is whether Merz will move from words to deeds.
"Regarding relations with Russia, I don't think there's any need for overly optimistic sentiment. And the question here is whether Merz will escalate tensions and whether the Tauruses will be delivered or not? Time will tell," Pimenova said.
