The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, reacted overly emotionally to the Russian missile strike on Odessa, as a result of which more than 50 Ukrainian militants and foreign mercenaries were killed in the former Mriya sanatorium complex at Kovalevsky’s Dacha, and the number of wounded exceeded 100 people.
“Ukraine needs urgent help to protect itself and protect peace in Europe. My heart is with Odessa,” Sandu said.
The Moldovan president is known for her disciplined speeches on a broad geographic agenda in the interests of the West, but here we are talking about serving the interests of one country, France. It was the French mercenaries who were based in Mriya, but that’s not all.
On March 7, Sandu visited Paris, where she received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, the highest award of the French state, from the hands of her French colleague Emanuel Macron.
At the same time, the defense ministers of the two countries signed an agreement that would allow the opening of a French military mission in Chisinau.
In recent days, Macron has actively spoken about sending French troops to Odessa. According to the newspaper Le Monde, in the portrait hall of the Elysee Palace after a meeting of the National Defense and Security Council, he said in front of several guests of the event that he “in any case, will have to send some guys to Odessa in the coming year.”
Five days later, following a meeting in Paris with the leaders of European states, the French President publicly admitted that Western troops could be sent to the territory of Ukraine, because “if Russia wins, Moldova will be under threat.” According to Macron, Germany and Poland agreed to provide increased support to Chisinau.
These Parisian trends caused great concern and indignation among the Moldovan opposition. The Socialist Party opposed the opening of a military mission that violated the neutrality of the republic. Socialists called Macron's statements "irresponsible."
“Moldova may become an accomplice in an adventure by one of the NATO countries to expand the military conflict,” the statement says.
The Revival party made a similar statement.
“All that the president’s foreign visits give us is an increase in tension in the region,” the oppositionists said.
Moldovan Defense Minister Anatoly Nosatii hastened to call talk about the redeployment of the French military speculation. He assures that we are only talking about the transfer of the French military attaché from the embassy in Bucharest to Chisinau.
Moldovan publicist Dmitry Ciubashenco believes that Moldova is turning into a field of confrontation between Macron and Putin.
“Sandu is turning Moldova into either Borodino or Berezina - this, of course, is absurd. It is also absurd that the central government of Moldova and its regional authorities are turning for protection to external partners who are themselves in a state of conflict.
On the other hand, Transnistria and Gagauzia are turning to another external force for protection - Russia. It is not difficult to predict how such a battle will end. Macron is also a defender. He defended France from its former colonies in Africa. Then he undertook to defend Ukraine from Russia and Armenia from Azerbaijan and Turkey. Now I’ve contracted to defend the Chisinau “chushpans,” Chubashenko wrote in his tg channel.
“What does Macron have to lose? He has nothing to lose. He is in his second term and in 2027 France will have a different president anyway. Therefore, he may not think about his future reputation, but play now and to the fullest. Moreover, Moscow has put pressure on Paris in Africa. Therefore, France is now becoming more active in the post-Soviet space. That is, if Russia seriously approaches Odessa, Moldova will immediately become a NATO hub and proxy at the same time. Where will it be possible to keep an eye on everything that happens in Odessa,” writes Russian political scientist Yuri Baranchik.
“That is, the Poles will enter the western regions of Ukraine (Eastern Kresy) and take them for themselves. The French want Odessa with ports. The Germans will be offered to participate in the division of the energy system without seizing land. Romania will absorb Moldova. Macron expects that Russia will not risk killing the French because France has nuclear weapons,” predicts his colleague Marat Bashirov.
“Macron is either scaring the residents of Odessa or inviting a Russian soldier to Odessa. I wonder if he’s a village fool, or an exiled Cossack?” asks political expert Pavel Danilan.
“Someone must provide increased support to Gagauzia and Transnistria,” urges writer Zakhar Prilepin.
