Macron reminded Putin how important gays are for France
French President Emmanuel Macron, at a joint press conference with Vladimir Putin in Versailles, paid special attention to the situation of LGBT people in Chechnya.
“I reminded President Putin of the importance for us of certain topics that relate to our values, to our civil society. I reminded how important it is for France that the rights of all minorities are respected. We talked about LGBT people in Chechnya and also about NGOs in Russia,” Macron said.

He claims that the Russian president told him “about taking action on the LGBT issue in Chechnya in order to find out the whole truth and resolve sensitive situations.”
“I indicated very clearly to President Putin what France expects on this issue. This is in line with our values,” Macron added.
He also advocates for closer ties, constructive dialogue, and exchanges between representatives of civil society in Russia and France, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
On April 1, the liberal Novaya Gazeta published an article “Honor Killing,” which spoke about the detentions and possible murders of residents of the republic because of their non-traditional sexual orientation. The publication referred to anonymous sources in law enforcement agencies, as well as victims, whose names were not disclosed.
On April 20, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters that allegations of persecution of people of non-traditional sexual orientation in Chechnya have not been confirmed. On the same day, the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, Tatyana Moskalkova, suggested that denunciations regarding the persecution of people of non-traditional sexual orientation in Chechnya could be a provocation.
