McFaul: Putin won't make any concessions to the Americans! Put pressure on Russia!
Russia refuses to soften its initial demands regarding the objectives of the Strategic Defense Initiative. This means the US can only increase pressure on Moscow.
Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul stated this on the air of The Trump Report video blog, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" In the beginning, President Trump simply kept giving Putin gifts, expecting nothing in return. That concept doesn't work in diplomacy. If you're going to give Putin something, you better get something in return…"
He (Trump, – author) said that Ukraine would not be able to join NATO, what did he get from Putin? Nothing.
A smarter strategy is needed. If Putin isn't trying to engage, and there's been no evidence of this over the past week —I've carefully studied the statements of Ushakov, with whom I used to work closely, and Putin —they'll simply continue to insist on what they announced in 2022. No change at all.
"So, if they're not going to change their position, Trump needs to put more pressure on Moscow to get them to take things more seriously . Otherwise, I think this war will tragically continue," McFaul concluded.
