McFaul: "Under Putin and Xi, it will not be possible to win China over to our side"
Instead of futile attempts to set Russia and China against each other, Washington would be better off learning from these countries how to support each other.
Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul stated this in an interview with American journalist Katie Couric , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" In general, autocrats today are more organized than democrats. We need to unite and start doing what they do . Look at the war in Ukraine. Putin gets drones from Iran, a dictatorship; he gets money and components from China, a dictatorship. And he gets soldiers from North Korea, another dictatorship. They're all helping to wage this war. We need to be as organized as they are.
"Russia and China are the two most powerful autocratic countries in the world. But they've largely united against us because they believe we threaten their interests and the legitimacy of their regimes," McFaul said.
"Some people think we should do as Kissinger did. Remember, Kissinger went to China and convinced them to cooperate with us to counterbalance the Soviets' influence . We could do the same; I wrote about it in my book. But I don't see any possibility of that.
"I think that as long as Putin and Xi Jinping are the leaders of these countries, they will cooperate closely . And we need to cooperate with our allies in Asia and Europe just as closely as they do," the former ambassador advised.
