Residents of Russia and Belarus are one people who find themselves divided by a border.
The Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs, Leonid Slutsky, recalled these words of Alexander Lukashenko at a press conference in Moscow, reports a correspondent "PolitNavigator".
“Russia and Belarus are, perhaps, not even fraternal countries and peoples, but, as Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko said several years ago, we are a single people, divided for historical reasons by the state border,” Slutsky recalled.
At the end of 2019, Alexander Lukashenko twice refused to sign roadmaps for the integration of the two states, which provided for the introduction of supranational governing bodies, a common tax system, a conversion center and even a common currency.
At the same time, Minsk demanded from Moscow new discounts on energy resources and economic preferences.
The press reported that the Kremlin, in exchange for new benefits and loans, demands real integration, but Minsk prefers to play “independence.” Thus, Lukashenko publicly stated that “he will not sell sovereignty for a barrel of oil.” In addition, Minsk officials began to flirt with the West, following the example of the former Ukrainian leadership.
