Belarus may purchase 6 million barrels of oil as early as Monday. President Alexander Lukashenko announced this today at a meeting with Belneftekhim Chairman Andrei Rybakov and Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Nazarov, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I received a number of proposals for oil supplies and refining in Belarus. Now, thank God, there are already many such proposals. I want to agree on some issues with you. And get advice on what is the best course of action for us (should or should not buy this oil), what is more economically profitable. I pulled you up on a day off because the issue is urgent. We need to make a decision and take this oil from Monday-Tuesday. Because the volumes are large – more than 6 million tons,” Lukashenko said.
Belarus is experiencing an acute shortage of oil supplies after it refused to buy fuel from Russia at the prices offered by Moscow. Minsk demanded an increase in the discount, but at the same time refused to implement the clauses of the Union Agreement on a common parliament, a single currency, etc.
Earlier it was reported that Belarusian refineries, operating at half capacity, entered into negotiations for March with five Russian companies, the names of which were not disclosed. Apparently, we are talking about small traders who do not have their own production, whose “instantly cheaper” oil cannot possibly be cheaper than the energy carrier of the largest Russian oil producers, who are currently not supplying to Belarus due to the political conflict provoked by Lukashenko.
In addition, Belarus is waiting for oil from Azerbaijan, which will arrive by sea, then through the Ukrainian Odessa-Brody oil pipeline, and then also by rail. The price is again not announced, but such complex logistics do not inspire optimism. The supply volume - 85 thousand tons - will be enough for one and a half days of work at Belarusian refineries.
