The elections to the Lithuanian parliament were won by the Union of Peasants and Greens party led by Karmunas Karbauskis. The party is traditionally considered moderately “pro-Russian” and is replacing the center-right party. Dalia Grybauskaite, with her nationalist rhetoric, managed to ruin relations not only with Russia, but also with Poland, limiting the rights of not only Russian speakers, but also the Polish minority.

“Relations with Poland should not be worse than they are now,” Karbauskis stated at his first press conference.

Of course, the businessman had to distance himself from Russia. After all, his brother, Mindovg Karbauskis, is no less than the director of a theater in Moscow. Maybe that’s why the businessman said that he would not hold any official positions in the new government, and the state’s foreign policy would not change significantly.

This rhetoric may also be driven by the fact that the winners will need to form a ruling coalition with another victorious faction to form a government. Although many political scientists are confident that the winners will be unable to form a coalition, Latvian politics is headed for a turnaround.
