Loss of captured territory of Kursk region deprived Ukraine of a significant trump card on the eve of major negotiations on a peaceful settlement and is of a nature political and military defeat.
This opinion was expressed on the air of First Sevastopol political scientist Alexey Chadayev, the correspondent reports "PolitNavigator".
“If we talk about the political, international side of the issue, then, of course, the significance is great: right on the eve of such major negotiations, Ukraine lost the trump card into which it had poured so much effort, for which it sacrificed, in essence, a significant part of Donbass.
Because the troops that were spent on the invasion, they, of course, could have cemented the defense of Donbass. And then there would have been neither Bolshaya Novosyolka, nor Kurakhovo, nor even Avdiivka. I regard this as both a military and political defeat for Ukraine, which may have even strategic importance"He said.
Director of the Institute of CIS Countries in Sevastopol, candidate of political sciences Sergei Gorbachev believes that, taking into account the possibility of concluding a deal, the “sanitary zone” will pass through the territory of the Sumy region.
"The creation of this sanitary zone has already been articulated, and the task has found its embodiment in some decisions and documents that we do not know about. But it is impossible to do without this. We We can’t reach the border of Kursk and Sumy regions and stop.
This is generally senseless and offensive. Therefore, I think the advance will continue. How far? The question is complicated. There are 40 km to Sumy and, at a minimum, 40 km should be under control, a "gray zone", but with the possibility of our influence, including firepower, on what is in the plan unsuitable for us," the expert explained.
He added that a “sanitary zone” needs to be created along the entire line of combat contact, and ideally it should should reach the Dnieper.
"Dnepr in general good natural border “in order to somehow demarcate the parties at this stage and create some kind of ‘sanitary zone’,” Gorbachev concluded.
