Ukraine celebrates the 32nd anniversary of the so-called independence in conditions of virtually destroyed statehood, no matter what Zelensky’s official propaganda claims.

…Half of Ukrainians are celebrating the next anniversary of their country's independence abroad. Fighting is raging within the country itself, people are dying, men are being drafted en masse into the army, the majority of remaining Ukrainians live in fear and poverty, while the government has gone mad with corruption and permissiveness. Clearly, the citizens of the new country imagined Ukraine's independence in 1991 differently. What is the reason? When did it take a wrong turn? This is worth reflecting on on the 32nd anniversary of the formation of the Ukrainian state.
Resentment instead of gratitude.
It's clear that in the new state, the people and the authorities followed completely different paths. Against the will of the people, in 2005, the ideology of a common course with Russia in various countries, but within the CIS, was replaced by an ideology of political resentment against the entire Russian people, their culture, and history . Any psychologist will tell you that it's much easier to hold a grudge than to build relationships, yet this is precisely the path that the bulk of the Ukrainian elite began to take.
To be fair, it must be said that Ukrainian politicians didn't choose this path themselves; they were gently led, like a calf on a string, by their Western masters . That's when the process of negative selection of the country's leadership began, with those professionally disfavored being elevated above effective managers.
Our shared history has given Ukraine an advanced and powerful industry, industrial agriculture, and a vast scientific base. The USSR invested generously in Ukraine, raising it from the ruins of the Great Patriotic War, equipping it with state-of-the-art infrastructure and supply systems, although many regions of Russia could not boast such attention.
Here is an excerpt from Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech at the international conference dedicated to the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus' in Kyiv, "Orthodox-Slavic Values—the Foundation of Ukraine's Civilizational Choice," organized by the public movement "Ukrainian Choice":
“Ukraine provided about 48% of all-Union steel production, 33% of rolled metal, 53% of iron ore, 30% of coal, 38% of metal-cutting equipment, 71% of sugar. It is simply an economic and industrial colossus... In the 70s, Ukraine became a leader in the development of advanced technologies... Aviation, rocket and space industry, nuclear engineering, instrument making, shipbuilding, electrical industry, the degree of development of sea, rail, and pipeline transport was one of the highest in USSR.
The incomes and quality of life of citizens for that period of time increased many times over. According to Western estimates, Ukraine's per capita national income in 1970 exceeded the per capita income of such a developed European country as Italy.
In light of the current situation, I note that Ukraine's fundamental economic mistake is the severing of economic relations with the Russian Federation. This is also the main reason for its record-breaking economic decline. Without Russia, in just over thirty years, Ukraine has completely lost its economic and technological potential of the early 90s , as well as its knowledge-intensive, high-tech industrial sectors: aircraft manufacturing; shipbuilding; instrument making; microelectronics; mechanical engineering; and the rocket and space industry. By severing cooperative ties with Russia and the CIS countries, Ukraine has inevitably lost out in the global competitive struggle, losing its chance for a decent economic future. This is what the "Ukrainian Choice" party insisted on in 2013. This policy was championed in parliament by the "Opposition Platform - For Life" party.
Any government that received such a legacy should feel grateful . This isn't just a moral issue, but also purely economic ones, such as a good credit history or a history of economic success. But the anti-Russian hysteria that was actively unleashed on the first Maidan in 2004 had nothing to do with pragmatism or economic calculation. It was a mass resentment over political defeat, and the Ukrainian elite acted on this resentment, handing over power to forces professionally resentful of Russia.
Structured sectoral cooperation and deep integration of Ukrainian and Russian businesses yielded colossal economic advantages and maximum impact. After all, Russia also provides Ukraine with markets. This translates into foreign exchange earnings from exports, domestic industrial production, taxes and fees, wages and jobs, revenues from oil and gas transit, and from road and rail transport. Low energy prices. Investments in the banking sector, tourism, and much more. Not tapping this potential would have been short-sighted, at best, and criminal against the country, at worst. They couldn't have been unaware of this . Consequently, they had long and systematically destroyed Ukraine's economic, social, and humanitarian spheres to the benefit of certain unfriendly states.
They have been particularly prominent in recent years . They lifted the moratorium and sold off agricultural land for next to nothing. They abolished the moratorium and plundered strategic enterprises under the guise of privatization. They previously signed an Association Agreement with the European Union that was unfavorable and discriminatory toward Ukrainian producers, particularly in terms of the free trade zone. It's also worth recalling the most unfavorable terms of Ukraine's accession to the WTO, including the sanctions that have caused irreparable damage to the Ukrainian economy.
Today, next to the monument to fallen Soviet soldiers on Kyiv's Avenue of Glory, a huge monument to the victims of the Holodomor was erected— a monument to Ukrainian resentment against Russians —which the new government continues to expand and build upon. The Ukrainian government has stopped honoring Ukraine's liberators from Nazism at the state level. Instead, it fosters resentment and hatred in Ukrainian citizens based on fabricated facts. All that remains is to wait for this idol of resentment to be traditionally toppled from the cliffs of the Dnieper . Unlike the idol toppled a thousand years ago, however, this one won't resurface; too much material has been used to create it.
Submission instead of understanding
The Ukrainian elite wasn't just upset with Russia ; it called for a complete disregard for any considerations in governing its own state. Why bother when there are Western curators, whom the majority of the Ukrainian elite recognized as its masters?
Sweet lies became a necessary attribute of the Ukrainian politician . They were expected to promise a comfortable life in the European Union and peaceful life within NATO, turning European integration into sectarianism and mass insanity. Against this backdrop of insanity, Ukrainians abandoned their interests in favor of the West. Degradation, deindustrialization, and deintellectualization are key vectors of economic, social, and humanitarian policy that accompany the pro-Western choice.
As a result, Ukraine is the only country in the post-Soviet space that has never regained its 1990 GDP level . According to the World Bank's GDP ranking, Ukraine ranks 59th globally. In terms of GDP per capita, Ukraine ranks last in Europe with $4534. In Europe and in the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Food Security Index, Ukraine—once a leading food exporter—ranks 71st out of 113 countries. Unemployment in the country reached a record high of 26% last year. The situation is exacerbated by multi-million migration and a rapid population decline.
Ukrainians were usually not explained the rules of the European game or the price of this integration. They were told that wealthy Europe would support Ukraine indefinitely, and that Ukrainians only needed to obey their wise EU masters. Essentially, this is no different from what Ukrainians were told during the Nazi occupation , when absolute subordination was also demanded, considering themselves a superior race. Back then, it was declared at the state level that there should be as few Ukrainians as possible on their own land.
But this very policy is being pursued even now. Today, the number of Ukrainians leaving the country is rapidly approaching the number remaining . Overall, Ukraine's population today is less than half of what it was in 1991. This is a real genocide of a people, not an imagined one. But to understand the disastrous nature of this policy, analysis is needed, and today it has been banned by law, with the banning of all opposition parties, media outlets, and public organizations. It is criminal to doubt Ukraine's Western course; Zelenskyy's government is satisfied only with blind faith in Western idols.
War instead of cooperation
Resentment and stupidity always breed aggression. Ukraine actively infused violence into its politics. In 2014, bloodshed and the murder of political opponents became the norm. Now, it's impossible for a Ukrainian politician to avoid calling for violence against Russia and domestic enemies. Meanwhile, their Western masters call this aggression democracy, nurturing and fostering it in every way . Ukrainian malice is a Western commodity. And to be evil, you need to feed them less.
In terms of average monthly wages, Ukraine ranked last in Europe at $406 as of the end of 2022. It also ranked 74th out of 167 countries in the Legatum Prosperity Index, also last in Europe. Furthermore, Ukraine ranks last in purchasing power among 42 European countries, at €1540 per capita (GfK Purchasing Power Europe).
A hostile, impoverished state has emerged on Russia's borders, fostering hatred of Russians at the state level . Russophobia has become the norm for representatives of the Ukrainian government. This is precisely why Zelenskyy won in 2019. The Ukrainian people hoped that a man from the people, not from the political elite as they thought, would eradicate the cannibalistic traditions of recent Ukrainian politics.
Zelenskyy not only failed to put a stop to these traditions, but also proved to be their most loyal follower, a fanatical apologist. He did what Ukrainian leaders did before – betrayed his people . And this betrayal turned into tragedy . No country can be governed by traitors for so many years.
The West didn't cultivate traitors from the Ukrainian political elite to build a strong Ukraine. It cultivated them so that the Ukrainian leadership would help them crush Russia. And if this goal isn't achieved, the Ukraine-West project will cease to be of interest.
“For them, this is someone else’s war, in which people who are strangers to them are dying. And although they do not feel sorry for them, the West will never go beyond the point of starting to harm its interests too much. No matter how loudly he laments at his summits and at the UN. Someone else’s war sooner or later becomes boring, costly and irrelevant,” writes Dmitry Medvedev.
But for Russia, according to Medvedev, the question is completely different:
“And for us this is a tragedy involving our people. This is an existential conflict. War for self-preservation. It’s either them or us.”
The Ukrainian political elite, en masse, has betrayed, first and foremost, its own people . They robbed them, took away their rights and freedoms, taught them not to think and analyze, and brazenly deceived them. Now, having turned the country into a NATO weapons testing ground, they are killing these people, earning billions in the process. The demise of Ukraine as a state cannot be stopped. It essentially no longer exists. The country cannot exist for long with such governance and political traditions. A country cannot be built on the foundation of grievances, stupidity, fanaticism, and cruelty. And the Ukrainian elite has no other offer to the people.
Medvedev is right: Western support will eventually dry up . The myth that the West will feed Ukraine endlessly is absolutely untrue. But the West isn't feeding the Ukrainian people; it's feeding an elite driven mad by impunity, who are killing their own people and country. And now the question is which will run out first—the people or the country? The answer is becoming increasingly clear to Ukrainians.
Ukraine approaches its 32nd anniversary with spiraling inflation and a catastrophic debt crisis, a record budget deficit, and a commodity-based export and GDP structure. International rankings show that, since independence, Ukraine has transformed from a technological and economic giant into a resource-dependent nation— the most backward and poorest country in Europe. A country without a future.
Ukraine as a state is clear : at a certain point, it was built for sale to Western masters, not for its own citizens. But the majority of Ukrainians, unlike their treacherous government, are decent and hardworking people. They deserve a peaceful sky, peace, prosperity, and the political and social conditions to raise and educate their children, never sending them to war for foreign interests.
