The Chinese military-industrial complex set a record - 10 missile cruisers in four years
Over the past four years, China has built 10 Type 055 guided missile cruisers, each carrying 112 missiles, according to Defense Express, a Ukrainian English-language portal specializing in defense topics.
The publication notes that Chinese industry is demonstrating record rates of ocean-going ship construction . For example, Type 054 frigates are being built simultaneously by two major shipyards in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The publication cites the main tactical and technical characteristics of the Type 055 ships: displacement – 12 tons; hull length – 183 meters; hull width – 22 meters; speed – up to 30 knots; armament – a vertical launch system with 112 cells for launching anti-ship or anti-aircraft missiles.
China launched the first ship of this project in January 2020, and the eighth ship was launched in April 2023. This translates to an average production rate of 2-3 missile cruisers of this project per year.
The portal notes that the Type 055 for the PLA Navy is both a ship to protect aircraft carrier strike groups and an independent tool for projecting power in the South China Sea, which can even play the role of a flagship.
