"China and India are our allies simply because they do nothing against us" – Bezrukov
In pragmatic interstate relations, everyone pursues their own interests, and even an alliance with Belarus is a very conditional concept.
This was stated on the Vedy channel by retired SVR colonel and professor of the Department of Applied Analysis of International Problems at MGIMO, Andrei Bezrukov , as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" Our closest partner is Belarus . And we can decide to do something together, create a Union State, but they are still responsible for themselves, and we are responsible for ourselves. And what we do together is an agreement. And if this agreement is disadvantageous to us or disadvantageous to them, it won't work.
"That is, an alliance isn't about this selfless friendship, no matter what. That doesn't happen in states . Would you like it to? Yes, you would. But that doesn't even happen between people. And therefore, state relations are, first and foremost, a relationship of interest. But we have a huge advantage over many ," he said.
"The thing is, we're a center of power, a military power . And we're treated as a country that can protect us, that can provide resources. And this is all done for political reasons. And countries like North Korea, our closest partners in the CSTO and so on, are, of course, much closer to us than others, " the former intelligence officer reasoned.
"But we have excellent relations, including military relations, with India, and with China, for example . And can they be considered allies? In a sense, yes, because they don't do anything against us ," Bezrukov added.
