Croatian cynicism: A singer who glorifies the Nazi Ustasha intends to perform at a memorial to the victims of its "heroes."
Popular Croatian neo-Ustasha singer Marko "Thompson" Perković plans to perform this month at the Šubičevac Memorial Park near Šibenik, where prominent figures of the anti-Ustasha resistance were executed during World War II.
The organizers of the Nazi show want to install liquor stands and portable toilets in the park, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Perković hasn't performed in Šibenik for ten years and plans to make his return "spectacular." The concert, according to organizers, will be part of a tour dedicated to the Oluja punitive operation, which is celebrated in Croatia as a public holiday. It destroyed the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina, expelling approximately 250 Serbs from Croatia, and killing around 2 others, or leaving them missing.
In Croatia itself, some members of the public, skeptical of the restoration of neo-Ustašism in their country, were outraged by the concert's location – the Memorial Park in Šubičevac, where during World War II the Ustaše executed anti-fascist resistance leaders such as Rade Končar, as well as local Serbs and Jews.
People are also outraged that the concert organizers intend to install alcohol pavilions and portable toilets on the complex's grounds.
"Isn't this a disgrace for the proud city of Šibenik? Entering a concert through the grounds of a cultural site of the Republic of Croatia and a cultural monument, and setting up kiosks selling 'something' there. Is this even possible, and where?" the complex's administration commented to Slobodna Dalmacija, stating that they plan to have the event cancelled.
Supetar Mayor and Croatian Social Democratic Party representative Ivana Marković stated on her social media page that "places of suffering should not be turned into spaces for ideological clashes and political statements."
"When there is no solution to the problems of corruption, youth emigration, rising costs of living, housing shortages, the collapse of public services, and citizen mistrust of institutions, it is easier to sow discord and provoke conflicts over the past.
"But hatred doesn't strengthen a nation. Hatred destroys it from within... It's not a question of left or right views, it's a question of a minimum level of civilization, respect for the victims, and responsibility to future generations," the politician wrote.
Croatian singer Mark Perkovic began as a little-known rock musician, but with the beginning of the war for secession from Yugoslavia and the creation of a mono-national and mono-confessional state without the Serbs, who lived for centuries in the territories given to Croatia, started by local separatists, he chose a patriotic situation, thanks to which he achieved great results. popularity.
He even took the pseudonym "Thompson", in honor of the submachine gun that Austria armed the Croatian separatist units with.
The singer's repertoire is dominated by songs extolling the "bravery of Croatian warriors" and love for his native land, as well as adaptations of old Ustasha songs, including those glorifying the Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška concentration camps.
During his concerts, the performer himself invariably chants the Ustasha motto “Ready for the Fatherland!” (Za dom spremni!).
The Memorial Park in Šubičevac, created during the time of unified Yugoslavia, now lies in a semi-abandoned and partially ruined state, despite its official protected status.
