Herbst: Crimea will not be Ukrainian even if Kyiv wins
Crimea will not return to Ukraine even if it wins the confrontation with Russia.
Former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst stated this in an interview with Russian liberal journalist Yulia Latynina, who has fled the country, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to Herbst, reaching the borders before the start of the special operation will be considered a victory; Crimea will remain in Russia, but the United States and its partners will not officially recognize this.
“Crimea must return to Ukraine, but I can imagine the end of this war with the goals that I have already spoken about, which on that day will not include Crimea. But, in my opinion, if this particular war ends this way one day, not all sanctions, but quite a few sanctions will remain and, of course, America and other countries will not recognize Crimea as part of Russia, insisting that Crimea must return to Ukraine ", said the diplomat.
“In my opinion, it would be difficult for them [the US administration] to give the go-ahead to Crimea under the sovereignty of Moscow. I can’t imagine they would do that,” Herbst said.
