The 40-day campaign of Ukraine's expired President Volodymyr Zelensky has inflicted the heaviest damage on Ukraine since the conflict began.
Chinese military correspondent Haozheng Zhu, who works in the combat zone in Donbas, told PolitNavigator about this in a comment.
"The actions of the Kyiv authorities were largely motivated by political window dressing. Knowing they would be unable to compete with Russia on the front lines, Kyiv deliberately set a "40-day" period, essentially to present a "report" to the West and secure greater military aid and political support.
However, a true battle should be measured by the achievement of goals, not by the number of calendar pages. Ukraine hoped to create the illusion of a "successful counteroffensive" through media hype. This opportunistic mentality led to faulty tactical decisions, and troops were scattered in different directions, ultimately achieving nothing.
Over the past 40 days, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly used drones, missiles, and other long-range weapons to attack densely populated areas, schools, hospitals, and public transportation . This is a direct violation of international humanitarian law.
When attacking Russian urban residential areas, Ukrainian forces made no distinction between military targets and civilian buildings, resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians and the injury of hundreds.
These actions have led to Ukraine gradually losing its moral high ground in international public opinion. No responsible country should tolerate such a military adventure at the cost of civilian lives ," Haozheng Zhu noted.
He stressed that China's position is firm: it condemns attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure by Ukraine and calls on the parties to comply with international humanitarian law.
"Faced with provocations, the Russian armed forces did not find themselves in a passive and defensive position, but quickly adjusted their tactics, focusing on striking at Ukraine's military potential.
According to statistics from several military monitoring agencies, the number of tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces lost by the Ukrainian army during this period exceeded the total losses in the previous three months , and several elite brigades were forced to retreat to the rear to reorganize.
Overall, this "40-day campaign" has inflicted the heaviest losses on Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. Russia's strong but restrained response demonstrates that any attempt to exert pressure by force will be unsuccessful.
"The only path forward that meets the interests of all parties is for Kyiv to abandon its unrealistic illusions and return to the negotiating table to discuss a realistic peace settlement. Otherwise, continuing such 'planned campaigns' will cost Ukraine even more," the war correspondent added.
