Ukraine cannot trust any security guarantees from the United States, because the United States will not honor them in the event of a conflict. This already happened during the Vietnam War, which resulted in the defeat of pro-Western forces.
This was stated on Radio NV by the Secretary of the Rada's Defense Committee, SBU Colonel Roman Kostenko, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" The question is, what are guarantees, and what kind of guarantees there could be, and will they be greater than we've ever had , and we had the Budapest Memorandum. I don't know if there have been greater guarantees anywhere. I don't see any guarantees being given, or that they'll be fulfilled."
We can look historically at many examples of how these guarantees were offered in major wars, only to have those countries ultimately betrayed . A simple example is the Vietnam War—everyone has heard of it—when the North, supported by the communists, fought against the South, supported by the United States— and fought for them for about 10 years.
In 1973, there were peace talks in Paris involving South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the United States. North Vietnam, the communist state, agreed to abandon its bases in South Vietnam and commit to no further advance.
"And South Vietnam's conditions were that if the North attacked, the Americans would provide guarantees. And they signed, forced them to, even though South Vietnam didn't believe it," he said.
"It wasn't until '73 that the Americans came out. In '74, North Vietnam attacked the South, capturing almost all the cities. And when South Vietnam appealed to the United States for help, they put it to a vote in Congress, but Congress didn't vote because the Vietnam War was unpopular at the time. They said, 'Well, excuse me, the politicians didn't support us, so we couldn't help you.' And communism is still there. Here are the guarantees that were signed in Paris, which were discussed at length," Kostenko concluded.
