A bank deposit is inherited. This applies to both regular savings accounts and deposits that the owner once chose as выгодные вклады To preserve and grow wealth. To receive funds, the heir usually needs to contact a notary, submit an application, and wait for a certificate of inheritance. The deadline for accepting an inheritance is six months from the date it was opened, which is the date of the depositor's death.

Money is transferred to heirs by will, testamentary disposition in a bank, or by law if the person has not made any arrangements in advance.

How to transfer a deposit to a specific person in advance

To ensure that the money goes to a specific person, you can draw up a will with a notary or a testamentary disposition at a bank.

A will is convenient if a person wants to distribute not only a deposit but also other assets: an apartment, a car, a share in a business, or valuables. The document can specify who should inherit what.

For bank deposits, there's a separate instrument—a testamentary disposition. It's drawn up at the bank. The document is signed by the depositor, indicating the date, and certified by an authorized employee of the financial institution.

This helps the heirs quickly understand who the money is intended for. However, the disposition does not completely eliminate the inheritance process: the funds will still be included in the inheritance and will be disbursed in accordance with the rules of the Russian Civil Code.

What should the heir do after the depositor's death?

You must contact a notary and submit an application for acceptance of the inheritance within six months.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. obtain a death certificate;

  2. Contact a notary: submit an application and provide all known information about your deposits and accounts. If you have a contract, statement, bank card, or at least the name of the bank, this will speed up the search.

A notary can make inquiries, but the less initial information, the longer the process takes. Therefore, the main mistake a family makes is not knowing where someone has kept their money. Sometimes there is a deposit, but the heirs learn about it too late or don't even remember to check old documents.

After the inheritance rights are formalized, the notary issues a certificate. The heir takes this to the bank: the money can be withdrawn, transferred to their account, or deposited again at their own discretion.

What documents will be needed?

Usually needed:

  • heir's passport;

  • death certificate;

  • Documents proving kinship, a will, or a testamentary disposition. If preserved, a deposit agreement, bank statement, or account details.

For the bank - a certificate of inheritance rights.

If your last name has changed, documents that link the old and new information will be useful: marriage certificates, divorce certificates, and name change certificates. The fewer gaps in the documents, the faster the notary will confirm the heir's rights.

Is it possible to get money before 6 months?

The law permits the use of a testator's funds, including funds in deposits and accounts, for the cost of a dignified funeral. The bank releases these funds upon a notary's order. The maximum amount of such a payment is 100,000 rubles.

The heirs receive the remaining money after registration of rights.

How not to waste time

It's best for depositors to avoid storing all their data in their memory. Create a list of banks, a folder with contracts and statements, and information about the notary or will. Avoid storing passwords, SMS codes, and app access codes—this is unsafe.

It's important for heirs to notarize their succession quickly. Six months may seem like a long time, but it quickly becomes a matter of finding documents, confirming family ties, and making bank inquiries. The correct order is: first, the notary, then obtaining the certificate, and then the bank visit.
