How the narrow-minded Simonenko surrendered Russian Ukraine to the nationalists
The Communist Party of Ukraine, under the leadership of Pyotr Symonenko, consistently surrendered all key positions to the nationalists, although several times it had chances to ensure guarantees of respect for the rights of Russian-speaking citizens.
Historian and political scientist Vladimir Kornilov shared these memories on the Rossiya-1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It’s a mistake to think that we started with decommunization - of course, we started with de-Russification, and we started a long time ago, in the 90s. Even in the late 80s, with the participation of the Communist Party of Ukraine, unfortunately.
Unfortunately, the communists passed the article on the state language when they were bargaining for the Constitution, but they could have blocked it, they could have even pushed through the federal structure.
"By the way, it was actively discussed under Kravchuk, and I was personally involved. In the early 90s, it ( the Communist Party – ed. ) was already legal, and they took first place in elections," the expert stated.
“What I mean is that a federal structure was seriously discussed. As I remember now, on the Kiev-Donetsk train, Pyotr Simonenko, the leader of the Communist Party of Ukraine, attacked my brother and me and shouted: “You and the Rukhovites fought, speaking for a federal structure!”
It’s clear that ten years later he realized that it was necessary, they put it on the slogans of the Communist Party of Ukraine, included it in the program, but unfortunately, they were always ten years late,” said Vladimir Kornilov.
