A well-known politician, ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Alexei Zhuravko, cannot come to his homeland in the Kherson region to bury his father, Honored Coach of Ukraine, Master of Sports of the USSR, football player Valery Zhuravko, who died today at the age of 72.
Saying goodbye to Zhuravko’s father, who is disabled from birth, is prevented by the regime established after the 2014 coup d’etat, which the politician suspects of “financing terrorism” - the SBU opened a criminal case against him under Art. 258-5 for the fact that he opposed the Maidan protesters and supported the Donbass republics.
“Criminal cases have been filed against me. I'm persona non grata there. If I appear there, I face a maximum prison term. I can’t go and bury my own father because the government still remains fascist, because criminal cases have been opened against me,” Zhuravko said.
Valery Zhuravko was an outstanding coach who worked with both Ukrainian teams and Azerbaijani Inter. As a senior coach, he led FC Vorskla and Inter to participate in the UEFA Cup, and Nikolaev, led by him, became the champion of the First League of Ukraine.
In his previous comments to PolitNavigator, Zhuravko frequently exposed the crimes of the Ukrainian government, criticized the current regime, and advocated for the Russian status of Crimea and the Donbas republics.
