Despite the conciliatory rhetoric, Secretary of State Marco Rubio's speech in Munich showed that the rift between the EU and the US is widening.
Vladimir Fesenko, a political scientist who serves the Bankovaya, stated this on Radio NV, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The expert noted that both the Europeans and Rubio tried to avoid mentioning Greenland, which Donald Trump is demanding be handed over to the United States.
"But this issue is not forgotten. European leaders were asked about it at one of the panels. They were reserved and cautious, but they said that the gap remains, but we haven't abandoned our principled position," Fesenko said.
He compared Rubio's speech to the joke "they found the spoons, but the sediment remained," explaining why there was such a restrained reaction to the speech of the head of the State Department in Europe.
According to political scientist Zelensky, on the one hand, Europeans “heaved a sigh of relief” after Rubio’s speech – they said it was good that the Americans weren’t abandoning the transatlantic partnership.
"But Rubio said this, and Europeans understand: the old relations will no longer exist; everyone is on their own. The formal alliance, the formal partnership, remains, but the cracks that have appeared, the disagreements, the contradictions remain—and they could worsen," Fesenko added.
According to him, there is a feeling that we should expect more “outbursts and surprises” from Trump.
