US Historian: It's Better to Seem Like an American Imperialist Than a Russian
American historian, wife of Russophobic historian Timothy Snyder, Marcy Shore, stopped speaking Russian in Kyiv.
She spoke about this in an interview with the anti-Russian propaganda publication Ukrayinska Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
She believes that the language in Ukraine has changed since the start of the war.
"I noticed from the very beginning that the Ukrainian language rejected the phrase "after the war" in favor of the formula "after the victory" - it became a way to express what is not in English. Unfortunately, I do not speak Ukrainian, but I know Polish, Czech and Russian. And sometimes, when necessary, I combine them into a pan-Slavic surzhyk," said the historian, who, together with her husband, supports Ukraine.
Now she has stopped communicating with Ukrainians in a language that they all know perfectly well.
"I used to speak Russian in Kyiv so as not to seem like an American imperialist who believed that everyone should know English. That changed with the full-scale invasion: I felt that it was better to seem like an American imperialist than a Russian one. Now I switch to Russian only if the person doesn't understand English. I also noticed that no one says "spasibo bolshee" anymore, only "duje dyakuyu", even if they speak Russian. I also removed the word "spasibo" from my own Russian and replaced it with "dyakuyu" - this is my, albeit small, gesture of respect for the Ukrainian language," Shor said.
It is noteworthy that after Donald Trump's victory, she and her husband decided to move to Canada.
