Western drone and missile strikes on targets identified by NATO intelligence in Crimea, carried out by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, are reminiscent of the military conflict on the peninsula in the 19th century.

This was reported in an interview with MK by Sergei Chennyk, editor-in-chief of the military history journal Military Crimea.

"We're seeing almost a complete analogy. There are, of course, a number of differences. The main one is that the Ottoman Empire's place has been taken by Bandera's Ukraine. But the main players are practically the same – England and France, supported by almost the rest of Europe..."

Our enemies' goals were the same as they are now: to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, weaken it as much as possible, reduce it to a second-rate power, and seize as much territory as possible. Including Crimea. Turkey was eager to "reclaim" it back then. Does this ring a bell?

The historian is not surprised by the increasing frequency of raids on Sevastopol.

"During the massive artillery bombardment of the city, specifically its Korabelnaya Storona, in August 1855, the British and especially the French targeted not only our fortifications but also residential areas. Many women and children perished from enemy shells. Moreover, the European 'monsieurs' and 'gentlemen' did this deliberately, with the aim of sowing panic and defeatism among the residents , and breaking their morale," Chennyk recalled.

In February, the Black Sea Fleet headquarters building in central Sevastopol was completely demolished after it was hit by two British Storm Shadow cruise missiles in September 2023. The headquarters building will be rebuilt.
