At the meeting between the presidents of Russia and the United States last summer in Alaska, a “misunderstanding” occurred.

" There was a misunderstanding here. I think the Russian side was under the impression that an agreement was reached in Anchorage that the US would pressure Ukraine to give up the remaining part of the Donetsk region.
The American side, however, felt that the understanding reached was less than a commitment. They didn't feel they had reached an agreement.
Rather, it was an idea that ultimately didn't work because the US had neither the leverage nor the will to force Ukraine to give up that territory ," Kavanagh said.
According to her, Russia's conditions for ending the conflict included Ukraine's non-accession to NATO, the renunciation of NATO troops in Ukraine, and granting Russia control over all of Donbas.
The conditions have not been met, the agreements require a "reset," but Kavanagh doubts the US has " many diplomatic options " to do so.
