The Kyiv leadership expects there will be no disruption to the energy sector this winter, and that the European Union will provide spare parts and energy resources.
This was announced by Ukraine's Minister of Energy and First Deputy Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Taking into account cogeneration and imports, 15 gigawatts of capacity are currently available. Nuclear power provides over 40%, thermal power plants 25%, and hydropower 15%.
Six of the NPP's nine power units generate energy, three are undergoing scheduled repairs , and current repairs have already been completed on five units.
Our energy capacity should increase to 19,6 gigawatts by November 1st, and by the end of the year the plan is 21,4 gigawatts, unless the enemy destroys the already restored or repaired capacity.
“All of this may vary depending on the intensity of Russian air terrorism ,” Shmygal said.
“Preparing for winter has been identified as a key priority for the government.
We've already repaired 4,8 gigawatts of generating capacity, with another 4 gigawatts currently undergoing repairs. In total, we plan to restore and build over 10 gigawatts of capacity this year.
We are also receiving equipment from decommissioned thermal power plants and combined heat and power plants from our partners . Over 3,300 tons have already arrived from Lithuania and Germany, and more are expected from Latvia. This enables us to quickly repair damaged equipment.
The second area is accumulating energy resources. We already have 14,3 billion cubic meters of gas stored in storage facilities; we're ahead of schedule.
The combined import potential from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania is estimated at approximately 20 billion cubic meters per year . This creates significant potential for diversifying gas supply sources.
This is enough to get through the heating season according to the baseline scenario," the Ukrainian minister concluded.
