Ideological sabotage in the Russian Academy of Sciences: It’s time to stop!

The events surrounding the elections of members of the Russian Academy of Sciences have revealed the dire situation in Russian science – decades of living off Soros grants have had their full impact.

An example is the story of Yulia Sineoka , who became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and subsequently left the country and created an office that was deemed undesirable in Russia.

This refers to the so-called "Institute of Independent Philosophy," on the basis of which Sineokaia attempted to cobble together a "new Russian school of philosophy abroad" from a gang of destructive elements who had fled Russia. The lady was clearly haunted by the laurels of those who had been passengers on the "philosophical steamship" of the 1920s.

Blue-Eyed was included in the RAS thanks to the support of several scientific functionaries, including such renowned figures as Academicians Alexei Smirnov, Abdusalam Guseinov, and Taliya Khabriyeva. Despite the obvious negative impact of Blue-Eyed's activities on the RAS's reputation, the leadership ignored the warning signs for a long time. Only after the Blue-Eyed sharashkino was officially designated an undesirable organization was its name removed from the list of candidates for the Academy's anniversary medal.

The final straw that broke the camel's back for both the public and the state was the scandal surrounding the dismissal of Anatoly Vladimirovich Chernyaev, a historian of Russian philosophy and candidate of philosophical sciences, from the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his support of the SVO. He turned out to be the only institute employee to actively support the SVO, visiting Donbas and participating in a philosophy conference there.

Alexander Pavlov, however, has emerged as a candidate for inclusion in elite academic circles. He thrives on the study of pornography and the more than dubious aspects of human activity associated with it. Pavlov's "scientific" interests range from the film industry (which is not punishable) to LGBT computer games (which is already punishable by law) and research into "adult videos" in the context of "what's so special about that?" Furthermore, Pavlov actively instills in his students the ideas of odious Western philosophers and other "idea-makers" known for their destructive views and outright hatred of Russia.

One of the most recent examples of such activity is the publication of a translation of Judith Butler's book "The Power of Nonviolence: The Linking of Ethics and Politics," presented by Pavlov at the Moscow International Book Fair. Despite its seemingly innocuous title, reminiscent of Mahatma Gandhi, the book advocates methods of "fighting oppression" through "velvet revolutions ," organized provocations, and making deviant behavior attractive to young people, with the goal of destabilizing the country and society.

The current state of affairs demonstrates a serious problem in Russia's humanities research community. While the academy was once a symbol of high intellectual culture, it is now increasingly becoming a target for manipulation by those seeking to instill destructive tendencies in the public consciousness of Russian citizens.

Clearly, the existing mechanisms for selecting new members of the Russian Academy of Sciences require radical reform. A transparent candidate evaluation system based on objective criteria and taking into account the social significance of their scientific work is essential. It is also important to reconsider the criteria for the moral responsibility of scientists, recognizing that RAS membership imposes serious obligations to society and the state.
