Most likely, the death penalty will return to Russian legislation, State Duma deputy, Lieutenant General Andrei Gurulev said on the air of Crimea 24.
"To prevent this from happening again, I am in favor of the death penalty for terrorists, for those who betray their homeland, and for pedophiles . A serious debate has erupted in the Duma. Judging by the mood of our members, I think the issue will be resolved," he said, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The author of the Russian Engineer channel, Alexey Vasiliev, on the contrary, considers the initiative unnecessary.
"In the last century, many innocent people died because of charges that were later overturned. Our judicial system isn't perfect enough to prevent innocent people from getting caught in these millstones."
A note about life imprisonment. There's an amendment allowing for parole after 25 years if the person has behaved well and complied with the rules. For those accused of terrorism, this option should simply be removed, and it would be like a death penalty, stretched out over time. They won't have any options for reentering society; for them, every day of their life is just a reprieve.
Discussions are underway to tighten prison conditions, creating an atmosphere where people often dream of being executed . We need to show them more often so that those who demand " crucify them here and now " can see that these creatures suffer every day; for them, this is a worse option than execution.
