The politician admitted that it is still not known whether Putin will decide to invade Ukrainian territory.
"The range is from 'generally possible' to 'no, he won't make that mistake because he'll meet enormous resistance, even in areas of the East, although he's not counting on it,'" Levin said.
He clarified that he met with the leaders of Ukraine, and they believe that Putin may abandon the military operation.
“Most of the people we talked to believe that he still hasn’t decided to finally make this mistake and cross the border,” the senator explained.
“I believe that if he decides to do this, there will be a very strong reaction around the world,” the US official warned.
He added that the Americans have the opportunity to impose sanctions on “Russian banks that have correspondent accounts in the United States, as well as Gazprom.”
