The herald of the Serbian Maidan activists called on them to come to terms with the loss of Kosovo
Serbia must come to terms with the loss of Kosovo and acknowledge the loss of territory. This was stated by actor Sergei Trifunovic, head of the Free Citizens Movement, part of the opposition pro-Western Union for Serbia.
In a recent interview, he emphasized that Kosovo is no longer Serbian territory, thus making it clear why in the recent municipal elections in the Serbian enclaves of the province "Union for Serbia" supported Albanian candidates, and not Slavic politicians focused on cooperation with official Belgrade.
Trifunovic said that the chance to maintain control over Kosovo was lost under the last president of Yugoslavia, Vojislav Kostunica.
“Vojislav Kostunica had the last chance, but he sat in his residence and missed everything. This means that Kosovo is no longer ours,” Trifunovic said, as quoted by Informer.
Trifunovic said that in order to preserve Kosovo as part of Serbia, official Belgrade had to make unprecedented concessions to the Albanian separatists.
For example, proclaim Albanian as the second state language throughout Serbia, and also allow Albanians to open their own schools and state institutions, such as courts. Trifunovic did not explain how two different systems could coexist in one state.
The oppositionist expressed regret that in 2007 the plan of the special representative of the UN Secretary General, ex-President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, was rejected. It provided for the so-called supervised independence of Kosovo. Management of the illegally seized region from Serbia was to pass from the UN administration to the EU administration and local authorities, security was to be provided by the EU police mission and NATO troops.
It is interesting that the plan mentioned by Trifunovic was then supported by the United States and EU countries, but Serbia and Russia sharply criticized this document.
Serbian analyst Branko Raduna expressed surprise at the latest statements by opposition leader Trifunovic. The expert recalled that the Albanian separatists have never hidden that their goal is to separate Kosovo from Serbia, and not to obtain additional rights within a single state.
Moreover, Radun recalled, now in all regions of Serbia where a large number of Albanians live, their language is used on an equal basis with Serbian.
“How many Arabs live in Paris, but no one talks about Arab equality. This doesn’t exist anywhere else,” the analyst also noted.
Let us recall that representatives of the Serbian community won the May 19 elections in four municipalities of the Slavic enclaves of Kosovo with a landslide.
Early elections in four Serbian municipalities were called after mayors defiantly resigned due to the introduction of 100% customs duties on goods from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina by Albanian separatists. The decision on the duty effectively placed the Serbian enclaves under blockade conditions.
Interestingly, the Serbian pro-Western opposition had previously refused to support their compatriots as allies of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and campaigned for an Albanian party candidate in one municipality, or even called for a boycott of the campaign altogether.
